PASSENGERS OF TIME

«Passengers of Time» grew out of my interest in the Moscow Metro as a space that is constantly changing together with the city and its people. I became interested in the visual environment of this underground city and its transformations, its rhythm, the behaviour of its passengers, and the way the feeling of the city changes underground.

I did not want to look at the Metro simply as transportation or architecture. It was important for me to see the person within this space and explore the city’s time through its everyday life. The Moscow Metro is, in a sense, a city within a city. It has numerous routes, rules and rhythms, and millions of human stories. Here, one can be surrounded by an enormous number of people and at the same time remain alone with oneself. The architecture of the stations, carriages, escalators, light and lines therefore became the environment in which the person reveals themselves. Through the passengers, I look at time. A passenger carries all the signs of their era. They appear in their appearance, in the objects and technologies they use, in their behaviour and in their interaction with space. Yet behind the changing forms of life remains something that allows a person from another era to recognise themselves in another human being.

«Passengers of Time» is not only a collective portrait of the contemporary Moscow Metro. It is an exploration of the human being within a particular time.

The photographs were taken in Moscow between 2021 and 2025.
